After considerable news coverage of Margaret Court’s open letter where she ‘threatened’ not to fly Qantas (because they support same-sex marriage), I was prompted to write my own open letter.
I realise you’ve had a rough trot lately, following your comments about same-sex marriage and Qantas.
Just to refresh your memory, you stated that you will stop flying Qantas “where possible” because the carrier supports of same-sex marriage.
Well just in case your memory needs further prompting, here’s a little more of what you said in your open letter to the Western Australian.
“I am disappointed that Qantas has become an active promoter for same-sex marriage.”
“Your statement leaves me no option but to use other airlines where possible for my extensive travelling.”
Your words promoted me to write my own open letter.
But instead of adding to the digital piles of hate, I would like to offer you my sincere gratitude and thanks.
I must admit, I was unaware that Qantas was ‘officially’ supporting same-sex marriage.
Like many other Australians, I didn’t think one had to ‘come out’ and officially support anything that was just a no-brainer, don’t you think?
Furthermore, I’m one of those consumers who tries spend consciously and until you brought this (Qantas supporting marriage equality) to my attention I had simply been booking my flights ad hoc with any ol’ carrier.
Without you, I would have carried on with my reckless flying habits and continued to book flights willy-nilly on any airline.
So thanks again, Margaret. You have helped me to see the light.
Because of you and the media storm you created, I’m now aware that Qantas support diversity and equality. As are thousands of other people who will now fly with the carrier.
The Qantas PR team should really be sending you flowers and a thank you card!
Your statement leaves me no option but to always use Qantas where possible for my extensive travelling. At least we can all rest assured that you won’t be on the plane with us.
